Michael Bisping wil geld zien
Middleweight kampioen Michael Bisping kwam vorige week nog in het nieuws vanwege het feit dat hij dusdanig geblesseerd is dat hij een paar maanden uit de roulatie ligt. Met zijn mond is er echter niets mis. Bisping liet even van zich horen, en verklaarde tegenover champions.co:
First and foremost, I am still UFC middleweight champion of the world,” Bisping said. “I have to defend that belt, simple as that. Dana actually- Dana White, UFC president- actually contacted me and spoke about a fight recently but I’ve been having a lot of issues with my knee so I’ve got to have a knee surgery. Maybe around end of April, May something like that, I’ll take a fight. I want the biggest fight I can get. I don’t mind facing No. 1 contenders but at this stage of my career I’ve fought the best guys forever. I want the biggest fight it can possibly be. By biggest, I mean the biggest money generating fight I can possibly have. I feel I deserve that. I’ve earned that. So whether that’s Yoel Romero, then great. But if it ain’t Yoel Romero, if it’s Anderson Silva, great. I know he’s piped up again lately. If it’s GSP [Georges St-Pierre]- I don’t care who the opponent is. I’m not bothered by any opponent. I am the champion of the world and I will take on all comers, but I want the biggest fight possible.”
De uitspraak van Bisping zal niet in goede aarde vallen van number one contender Yoel Romero. De namen die Bisping opnoemde, zijn allen groter als die van hem, en zouden er weleens voor kunnen zorgen dat Romero zijn titelshot niet krijgt. Ook wil Bisping tegen welterweight kampioen Tyron Woodley vechten. Het is niet gek dat ‘The Count‘ nadrukkelijk op zoek is naar een groot ‘money fight’, de Engelsman is inmiddels 37 jaar en vechters hebben nou eenmaal niet het eeuwige leven. Bovendien past dit volledig in de huidige cultuur van de UFC, waarin vechters openlijk vragen om nieuwe gevechten en in veel gevallen zelf voor matchmaker spelen. Kan Bisping Romero ontduiken?
Khabib bedreigt Tony Ferguson
Khabib Nurmagomedov zal op UFC 209 samen met Tony Ferguson uitmaken wie de eerste uitdager voor Conor McGregor wordt. Tussen de twee kemphanen is het vuur al aardig opgestookt. No love lost here. Maar ‘The Eagle‘ gooit vrolijk nog wat extra olie op het vuur. Zo zei hij tegen MMAFighting dat hij de arm van Tony Ferguson gaat breken wanneer hij zijn kans schoon ziet: ”
“If you watch when I fight dos Anjos, Michael Johnson, Darrel Horcher, these guys are my opponents but he’s a little bit different than other guys. I want to break his face because I want to teach him respect. When I fought with Michael Johnson, when I took his arm for the kimura, I can break it but I go very slowly, be careful because I don’t want to give him injury. Because I understand [the] fight was finished. I need only to go a little bit slowly and he tapped.
“If Tony Ferguson gives me this arm, I’m going to break his arm like Frank Mir- [Antonio Rodrigo] Nogueira.”
De uitspraken van de Rus zullen de anticipatie op het gevecht alleen maar groter maken. We zijn benieuwd wat Tony Ferguson hierop te zeggen heeft.
Mike Goldberg laat van zich horen
Mike Goldberg verliet na UFC 207 zonder enige tamtam de UFC. De commentator vormde jarenlang met Joe Rogan het vaste commentator duo bij UFC evenementen, maar is zonder pardon, en zonder afscheid, door de UFC buiten de deur gezet. Tot verrassing van velen. Zijn abrupte vertrek heeft bij veel fans en journalisten een vreemde smaak achtergelaten. Maar vooral ook bij zichzelf. Hij verklaarde op ‘The MMA Hour’:
“It was a shock,” Goldberg said on The MMA Hour. “I was speechless. I didn’t know what type of emotion to have, because I was just in a state of shock and disbelief. People love that warm, fuzzy blanket. That’s what you were describing a second ago, and (longtime broadcast partner) Joe (Rogan) and I have been that warm, fuzzy blanket for a long time when it came to the UFC. Everybody gets new blankets and they get new furniture, but at the end of the day, when you cuddle up on a Sunday and you watch football, that blanket in the corner that’s got holes in it, and it’s kinda smelly but that’s your blanket, that’s the one you utilize.
Joe and I have been so blessed and fortunate to be — and I love the description, ‘the soundtrack’ — so blessed and fortunate to be the soundtrack of the UFC for so long, that it really was, I was in shock and disbelief for that reason. I watched everything around me be shattered. It took 15 years to build this wonderful family, and it felt like it was taking 15 minutes to destroy it.”
UFC President Dana White nam niet eens de moeite om Goldberg te bedanken voor al de jaren trouwe dienst, en de commentator kreeg ook niet de kans om op gepaste manier afscheid te nemen van de organisatie en zijn fans. En dat deed pijn. Op de vraag of Dana White later nog contact met hem had opgenomen antwoordde Goldberg:
“No conversations, no contact. Nothing, really. Nothing. Which was surprising. Disappointing, certainly. But nothing was said, and I’ve got to live with that. At the end of the day, what matters to me is my family, my children. But no, to answer your question directly, there was no conversation. Nothing at all.”
Voor ‘Goldy‘, die met zijn bulderende ‘It’s all over, just like that’ zijn aanwezigheid duidelijk liet merken, is het ook daadwerkelijk over. Just like that. Eigenlijk heel ironisch…
Chris Weidman niet bang voor Mousasi
Vorige week berichtten wij nog over het aanstaande gevecht van onze landgenoot Gegard Mousasi, die op UFC 210 het op zal gaan nemen tegen Chris Weidman. Daarvoor nam Mousasi nog even de gehele middleweight divisie op de korrel, en noemde Chris Weidman een angsthaas. Daar is Weidman duidelijk niet van gediend. Inmiddels heeft hij zelf gereageerd:
I want to get that belt back and fighting the toughest guys in the division is the way to do that. I don’t take that last loss and think I need to be some guys who aren’t on my level up to get my confidence back. I know exactly what I did wrong and what I have to do differently, so I don’t need to fight any guys to get my confidence level up. I’m just as confident as i was. I feel like Mousasi is a great fight for me to get back on my winning ways and get close to fighting for the title again.”
Mousasi was op twitter aardig bezig om ‘The All-American’ te irriteren en uit te dagen. En dat lukte. Weidman stemde snel in met een gevecht tegen Mousasi, maar gaf aan zeker niet bang te zijn:
“He was implying on Twitter as if I turned down a fight with him. Which was one of those things like I’ve never turned down a fight in my life, so right away my ego is going in like this guy wants me to start cursing him out and going nuts and telling everyone the truth. I’m like whatever, let’s get this date and get the fight signed. Once he started talking, I was like this is the guy I want, I’m going to make him pay, but I didn’t feel like going on a whole Twitter rant about it. I just made sure this fight was the one that was going to happen.”
Anderson Silva hekelt nieuwe UFC
En we blijven even in de middleweight divisie. Legende Anderson Silva heeft zich uitgelaten over de nieuwe eigenaren van de UFC. Erg tevreden lijkt ‘The Spider‘ niet.
“I think they just took a big risk because the face of the UFC was always Dana (White) and Lorenzo. When you don’t have Dana and Lorenzo, the good cop and the bad cop, it’s kind of up in the air. But let’s be positive. I believe everything will be alright. It’s a company that is worried about entertainment. It’s not a company with a history in martial arts, the philosophy of the fight. That’s one of the reasons why ‘Jacare‘ is not fighting for the title because, for them, it’s not something profitable, that will bring the entertainment they need. I think they are trying to make it more entertainment and and less martial arts. MMA doesn’t have the martial art philosophy, but it’s becoming less sport and turning into entertainment.”
De Braziliaan is duidelijk een beetje bezorgd over de nieuwe richting van de UFC. De nieuwe eigenaren lijken zich veel meer bezig te houden met entertainment dan met martial arts. En daar valt zeker wat voor te zeggen.

Dat Mike Goldberg weg is, vind ik erg logisch. Die man schreeuwt alleen en snapt niets maar dan ook helemaal niets van mma. Natuurlijk had de UFC wel een net afscheid moeten regelen, dat is erg slecht gedaan. Maar dat ze hem niet meer als commentator willen, is mij volstrekt duidelijk.
