Tony Gwynn, Hall of Famer en 20 seizoenen het gezicht van de San Diego Padres, is op 54-jarige leeftijd overleden aan de gevolgen van de ziekte kanker. Gwynn wordt gezien als één van de beste slagmannen aller tijden en werd in 2007 toegelaten tot de Baseball Hall of Fame.
Zijn prestaties spreken voor zich. Gwynn werd vijftien keer verkozen tot All-Star, acht keer tot beste slagman, veroverde zeven Silver Sluggers en vijf Gold Gloves. Hij eindigde zijn loopbaan in de Majors met 3.141 honkslagen en een .338/.388/.459 batting line.
