Big man Dwight Howard heeft zijn imago niet mee. De 30-jarige zou een man-baby zijn, niet in staat om basketball serieus te nemen en na 12 seizoenen in de league nog altijd te raw om echt te kunnen domineren. Als je over Dwights godgegeven fysiek kunt beschikken en één-op-ééntraining krijgt van Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, dan zou je toch verwachten dat je game verder is gevorderd dan dunks en putbacks? Maar dat is het dus niet. Tel daarbij zijn onfortuinlijke exits uit Orlando en Los Angeles, zijn lagere cijfers en eeuwige goofball-mentaliteit, en je begrijpt waarom zijn ooit zo veelbelovende carrière al zo’n vijf jaar op een zijspoor zit.
In een nieuw interview met Jackie McMullan van ESPN.com vertelt Howard vrijelijk over zijn carrière, zijn frustraties bij de Houston Rockets en hoe zijn toekomst er zal uitzien. Niets is zeker, maar het zou wel eens heel goed kunnen dat de achtvoudige All-Star zo’n 23 miljoen dollar op tafel laat liggen deze zomer. De verhoogde salary cap zou hem namelijk een veel lucratiever contract kunnen opleveren, bij de Rockets of elders.
Een paar opvallende fragmenten uit het interview:
ESPN: Most people believe you will opt out of your contract with Houston on July 1. Are you leaning that way?
Howard: “To be honest, I have had some conversations with close friends on what would happen if I do opt out. But I haven’t really come out and said, ‘I’m going to opt out and do this and that.'”
Conclusie: Howard maakt het nog niet officieel, maar zegt in feite dat hij al druk bezig is de mogelijkheden af te wegen.
ESPN: You mentioned your season in Houston didn’t end the way you wanted. You have also admited that you were “disinterested” during parts of the year. Why was that?
Howard: “There were times I was disinterested because of situations that happened behind the scenes that really hurt me. It left me thinking, ‘This is not what I signed up for.'”
ESPN: What specifically are you referring to?
Howard: “I felt my role was being reduced.”

ESPN: What is your relationship with James Harden like?
Howard: “Before I got to Houston, I didn’t know him as a person” […] “I was thinking, ‘Man, this guy could be special.’ When I hit free agency, I watched YouTube tapes of James for hours. I looked at us as a mini Shaq and Kobe.”
ESPN: Your relationship with Harden seems to have deteriorated along with the team’s performance last season. What happened?
Howard: “I don’t know. I want to figure that out, too. I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around this season, what went wrong, and sometimes you can allow outside things to interrupt the circle. That probably happened with us.”
Conclusie: Howard en Harden zijn niet de beste vrienden.
ESPN: You obviously were unhappy in Houston this season. How can you go back?
Howard: “That’s a fair questions. You never know what will hapen. I’m not ready to rule anything out.”
Conclusie: Ik ben zo goed als weg.
ESPN: How much do you think you are worth? Do you still think your are a “max” player?
Howard: “This will be my last chance for a really big contract. If I am utilized the right way, I know what I can do for a team, a city, a franchise. I know my worth, and I will bust my butt this summer to show everyone else.”
